By on December 30, 2009

What does BDSM stand for?
BDSM, you’ve heard of it, but do you know what the letters stand for? BDSM is a combination of the following sexual behaviors:

  1. Bondage & Discipline
  2. Domination and Submission
  3. Sadism and Masochism

What is Bondage & Discipline, or B&D?
B/D is the physical or symbolic restraint of a person while another person verbally or physically punishes them. The punishment could involve verbal correction, spanking and other similar activities.

What is Domination & Submission, or D&S?
D/S is the mental side of BDSM. Many people obtain erotic enjoyment or sexual pleasure by dominating another person, being dominated, and at times switching these roles with their partners.

What is Sadism and Masochism, or S&M?
S/M is inflicting or receiving mental and/or physical pain and torture. Sadism is sexual pleasure or gratification derived from inflicting pain and suffering on another person. The other side of sadism is masochism which is the sexual pleasure or gratification of receiving pain or suffering through fantasies or urges for being beaten, humiliated, bound, tortured, or otherwise made to suffer.

Who practices BDSM?
Almost everyone practices BDSM in their sex life in one way or another. Holding a persons arms down, nibbling or biting, spanking or slapping, hair pulling… these are all forms of control which BDSM is ultimately about. The practice of BDSM in a couple’s relationship can range from occasional play mixed in with normal sex to a lifestyle where people live their entire lives by this practice.
